CORE COMPONENTS / DRAWING-LED REVIEW

Axial flux motor housings. Start with the air-gap datum chain.

An axial flux motor housing connects bearing alignment, rotor position, stator location and cooling. Request a machining review that follows these interfaces through assembly and final inspection.

DESIGN TO MANUFACTURING

A flat housing face does not guarantee an assembled air gap.

Bearing seats, axial shoulders, rotor faces and the stator carrier contribute to the assembly stack. Coating, fastening and heat can change that stack. Start from the functional datum scheme and identify which dimensions must be inspected in the final condition.

01

Quote functional surfaces clearly

Separate bearing seats, sealing faces, stator locating features and noncritical surfaces. Explicit datums and acceptance methods avoid paying for precision that does not control the functional assembly.

02

Review the process sequence

Discuss stock form, material condition, roughing, stress management and finish machining. Thin annular sections and asymmetric cooling channels need a distortion review before a tolerance is promised.

03

Keep cooling and inspection connected

Specify coolant, operating pressure, sealing architecture, corrosion conditions and leak acceptance. Ask how inaccessible channels and coated sealing faces will be verified rather than assuming a generic pressure test is sufficient.

DFM / SCOPE & COST DRIVERS

Specify a housing by the interfaces it controls.

No blanket micron-level tolerance is advertised. Achievable limits depend on geometry, material, process and the agreed measurement method.

AGREE THE EVIDENCE

Define acceptance before samples.

  • Record material identity and drawing revision before machining release.
  • Inspect functional bearing/mounting datums in the specified condition.
  • Agree surface-finish, coating and leak-test records where applicable.
  • Validate the assembled stack separately from a housing dimensional report.

Housing metrology establishes only the characteristics measured under its stated conditions. It does not prove a safe hot running gap, bearing life, pressure certification or motor-level vibration performance.

START WITH NON-CONFIDENTIAL INPUTS

Prepare your housing brief.

Send the scope and operating envelope first. Request an NDA before sharing proprietary artwork or detailed CAD. The next step is scope clarification and feasibility review; pricing and timing follow the agreed deliverable.

  • STEP geometry plus a controlled PDF drawing; include units and revision.
  • Material/condition, bearing/seal specifications and functional GD&T datums.
  • Cooling/sealing requirements, fastening conditions and surface treatment.
  • Critical-characteristic list, sample quantity, recurring forecast and inspection expectations.

Operating envelope (optional)

Enter target continuous values in the stated units. Describe peak duration, duty cycle and temperature limits in your summary. These inputs are requirements, not a product rating.

Selecting a request does not sign an NDA or confirm material availability or export clearance. We review the actual part, destination and documentation needs.

ENGINEERING FAQ

Before a housing quotation.

Is a STEP file enough for a machining quotation?

It supports geometry review, but critical tolerances, datums, finish, material and acceptance conditions should be stated on a controlled drawing or specification. Identify which document governs if geometry and drawing differ.

Can a housing be quoted independently of the motor?

Yes. Supply the functional drawing, mating interfaces and acceptance criteria. Electromagnetic design, bearings, seals and complete motor assembly are separate unless explicitly included.

Can a fixed air-gap tolerance be guaranteed from this page?

No. The required component tolerances and assembly clearance budget must be reviewed for the actual design, operating loads and temperature range. The quotation defines the accepted limits and verification scope.

Should inspection happen before or after coating?

State the final functional condition on the drawing. Some dimensions may need in-process checks and another check after coating, treatment or assembly. Agree masked surfaces and coating allowances during DFM.
